Modern information technologies in cancer treatment

V. V. Chernikov

On July 9, at 10:00, a meeting of journalists with specialists from the Samara Regional Clinical Cancer-Prevention Center (Samara, Solnechnaya Str. 50) took place.

Cancer specialists told about the usage of tele-healthcare technologies in the Regional Cancer-Prevention Center.

According to Maxim Bagaev (Regional Director of YSAR+), 'In 2011, in the Samara Region and for the first time in the country, tele-healthcare technologies started to be used for cancer diagnostics'.

That is when the system of remote medical consultations (developed by YSAR+) began its implementation by stages in the region. Today, patients from far-away villages do not need to visit specialists in Samara. Examination results are received by doctors within seconds via a tele-healthcare network. Close collaboration has been established with the Syzran Central Municipal Hospital.

Doctors from the Cancer-Prevention Center, in the event of encountering ambiguous situations while consulting patients from Syzran, send data to Moscow, to the leading national cancer-prevention institution, the Russian Scientific Center for Cancer Studies named after N. N. Blokhin, and Moscow experts give their opinions. It is planned to establish the scheme of tele-healthcare consultations with all remote regional districts.

For consultations in complex cases, as a rule, a council assembles being comprised of doctors from the treatment-and-prophylactic institution being consulted and specialists from the Samara Regional Clinical Cancer-Prevention Center (surgeon, radiologist, chemotherapist). The aim of consultation is to develop a strategy of treating patients with malignant tumors, including determination of the best algorithm of revision diagnostics and treatment, as well as expert revaluation of results of diagnostic examinations performed by the relevant treatment-and-prophylactic institution.

Plans for modernization of the Automated System of Remote Tele-healthcare Consultations include implementation of the system of descriptions, recommendations and statistics of mammography screening, which was developed on the basis of the BI-RADS international standards and allows to increase detectability level for early stages of breast cancer, as well as to bring specialists' skill levels in accordance with current quality standards.

Vadim Vyacheslavovich Chernikov, Head of the IT and Computer Department of the Samara Regional Clinical Cancer-Prevention Center (State Budgetary Healthcare Institution) explained that 'The tele-healthcare network was created not only and not so much for current document workflow, but for the purposes of treatment and diagnostics. That is why it is extremely important to use these modern functionality to the fullest extent possible, so that quality and accessibility of medical services will be increased'.
