Structured cable system

A structured cable system (SCS) is a hierarchical cable system which is installed in a building or group of buildings and which is comprised of structural subsystems. Its equipment is made of a set of copper and optic wires, cross-panels, connecting cords, cable sockets, module sockets, data sockets, and ancillary equipment. All components of SCS are integrated in a single complex (system) are are operated in accordance with specific rules.

A structured cable system is an integrated and integral part of the building's utility system. Once installed, it performs its functions for many years, during which several generations of telecommunication equipment can come and go.

As is known, the principal and only functions of SCS is guaranteed and uninterrupted provision of various services to subscribers. In modern networks it is represented, as a minimum, by voice and LAN data which, when necessary, can be supplemented with signals of the building's essential facilities, security and fire alarms, video surveillance systems, cable television, etc. Besides, SCS has its own circuits of power supply and protection.

Due to the increase in the numbers of computers used and computerized workplaces, it is necessary to consider (at each enterprise and in each office) the issue of creating a structured cable system. Otherwise, investing money in expensive networking equipment, servers and workstations can fail to provide increase in quality of LAN operation and prove to be inefficient.

A structured cable system set up in a correct manner would have 20 years of full warranty for connections and would allow to protect financial investments. According to estimates of independent experts, SCS decreases costs of network administration by a factor ranging from 2 to 5, decreasing idling time (faults) in LAN operation by 30-50%. SCS allow quick addition and re-configuration of workplaces.
